"Forces of Life: Psychology and Success or Failure in Ourselves and Our Children by David L. Shepard is an eye-opener. We are all pursuing happiness and success to such an extent that they have become the defining themes of our lives—and we’re still not very good at it. After reading this book, a statement in the epilogue struck me: "Surviving life's problems is a life-long struggle. The more we learn, the better off we will be." Having quoted that, Shepard presents solid and feasible lessons along with case studies that allow you to develop the necessary social skills and knowledge to navigate your way into life. It sounds good on paper, but the book does more by explaining the psychological dimensions of wellbeing. It also points to the systematic errors in pursuing what we want, thereby inviting us to rethink our age-old beliefs about the good life. It also exposes the errors of the government, the school system, and the mass media that aggravates our mental and emotional scars.
Now I have a more solid understanding of why many of us are unhappy and what I can do today to make my life better and more meaningful. This book is not the holy grail of happiness; it is a roadmap to help you find the path to the life that you deserve. What you will learn here is something that you can never obtain in school or by talking to your therapist in costly one-hour sessions, and the 25 Points in this book will help turn your life around. David L. Shepard has written an indispensable work that reassures you it is not too late to reach a sense of fulfillment and motivate your children to pursue the right things. Forces of Life is thoroughly engaging with its philosophical and scientific take on happiness and wellbeing. It is a must-read resource for the layman and philosophers, social scientists, and especially policymakers."
