Georgie Calverley

Hello everyone, my name is Georgie, but everyone knows me as George. Some friends and family call me David, my second name. South African by birth, I moved to the UK in 2001 and worked as a recovery or post anaesthetic nurse. I freelance, which gives me time to write, travel and enjoy my free time and life. I am a keen walker, sometimes runner and swimmer.

In 2004, I began a diary of my time in London and sent them to a South Africa friend. A time before blogs became a reality, and she asked if I planned on writing a book. I said yes, without realising the magnitude or knowing anything about the process. In 2018, I published the first part of A Coloured in Full Flight, the boy from the barracks.

Not expecting much, the response was overwhelming, motivating and inspiring. A year later, the next instalment, A Coloured in Full Flight, the fight to be me, came out. The books trace a life of abuse, bullying, racism, racial inequality, discrimination and social injustices in a racially segregated South Africa.

Bullied for being gay, I faced a barrage of social, emotional and mental victimisation, which left long-lasting scars. After years of struggling to fit in and accept myself, and by writing the book, I realised the extent of my suffering. Every bullied child or adult will have a different journey or story, and others may never get to tell their horrible tales.

I am grateful to share the narrative and hope it may help those who think there is no way out. I am proof that guardian angels exist and no matter how tough things may seem, you are never alone.

Love, Peace, Unity and Happiness
