In 1970 I was misdiagnosed with an acute psychotic episode due to trauma. I was able to continue my career but had a second episode in 1974. This time I was accurately diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I accepted this diagnosis, learned as much as I could about it and became aware that it is treatable. Therefore, I followed treatment and have had no more episodes. In 1977 I became aware of the fact I am also an alcoholic. Again, I accepted this fact and became involved in a recovery program. I have had an interesting and productive life, have continued my career for over 50 years and have written this book, “It Began with Huntley Drinkley, a Journey through Alcoholism and Bipolar Disorder.”

It has been a pleasure to write the book which took me through the trip of my life. I wrote it for people with these two disorders, for their significant others and for those who treat them. I feel privileged to share my experiences and solutions in life in spite of these problems.

I also have developed some educated beliefs about being bipolar. I believe it is important to recognize that many bipolar people do become addicted to alcohol, sometimes drugs, because they do have an effect on either covering or lessening symptoms. I felt that alcohol calmed my mania to some extent, Unfortunately, this came with rather difficult repercussions. I became addicted. Also, unfortunately, these substances interfere with the effectiveness of helpful medications. Therefore, developing a lifestyle without substance abuse is especially important and definitely possible.

I have had an interesting and full life. I believe this is available for others with these disorders. In fact, I believe it is possible to have not just a good life if we take care of our disorders, but even a special life.
