Barbara M. Arisi

Barbara M Arisi is professor of Anthropology at the Federal University for the Integration of Latin America (UNILA), in Foz do Iguazu, Brazil. Currently she is a researcher in an international cooperation project between NUFFIC and CAPES, working for the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. She worked as a visiting scholar at the universities of VU Amsterdam (2016/17) and UFSC (2012; 2019/20). She had her PhD internship in the University of Oxford, in the UK (2010). She has been conducting fieldwork among indigenous peoples in Amazonia since 2006, in the Terra Indígena Vale do Javari (AM), specially with the Matis people. More recently, she researches about innovation and imagination for the future in the new field of circular bio economy, specially in The Netherlands. Her most recent books are Queer Natives in Latin America (2020, to be launched, co-authored with Gontijo and Fernandes) and Gay Indians in Brazil (2017, co-authored with Fernandes).
