JASON MAYO

Jason Mayo is author of In Case of Emergency, Break Childhood. He is the founder of Sober Not Subtle, a storytelling and advocacy platform focused on breaking the stigma around addiction, recovery, and mental health. He’s also a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) and Certified Addictions Recovery Coach (CARC). He works at a local recovery community center, where he facilitates a weekly dads’ group, runs sessions at the county jail, trains others in Narcan use, and speaks at schools to share his lived experience with mental health and addiction. He’s also an active member of several community action and prevention coalitions.

Jason is a contributing writer for The Sober Curator and previously wrote as a member of the Forbes Business Council, sharing insights on leadership, purpose, and personal growth.

Before entering the behavioral health field, Jason owned and operated award-winning visual effects and animation companies in New York City, partnering with some of the world’s top global brands. He’s a Twitch Partner and content creator, an avid tattoo collector, a lifelong metalhead, and a proud zombie enthusiast.

He first gained attention in the parenting world as the creator of the dad blog Out-Numbered, which earned national recognition—including BlogHer’s Top 100 Voices of the Year and multiple appearances on Babble’s Top 50 Dad Bloggers list. In 2013, Working Mother named him one of the “25 Dads Who Rock,” alongside Barack Obama, Brad Pitt, and Neil deGrasse Tyson.

He’s also the author of two children’s books—Do Witches Make Fishes? and The Boy and the Billy Goat—with all proceeds donated to help children impacted by trauma.

Jason got sober in 2010. He lives in New York with his college sweetheart—together for over 30 years—and their two daughters, who keep him humble.

His debut memoir, In Case of Emergency, Break Childhood, was released on September 9, 2025.
