Angela Ragusa

Angela Ragusa was born in Taranto, Italy, and attended university in Florence working in publishing there after graduating in Political Science. She moved to Sardinia in 2005.

She has written 15 books, so far, including: I cavalieri del vento (Piemme, 2006; republished by Condaghes in 2020), winner in 2006 of the Cento Award, as best book in Italian for children, and in 2008 it won the Sardinia Award as the best fiction book about Sardinia. In 2009, Luci di mezzanotte (Piemme, 2008) won the Un Libro per l'Ambiente Award as best fiction book on the environment, and was a finalist in 2010 for the Critics in Erba Award (Young Critics Award). Among her other books are : L’albero delle 1000 dolcezze (Giunti, 2009; finalist of the Premio Nati per Leggere, 2010) as best book for young readers, and La casa delle rondini (Piemme, 2010) a finalist of the Premio Critici in Erba in 2011. In 2016 she published Lo scoiattolo che amava il cioccolato, a book for children with Feltrinelli, and with the CentoAutori publishing house two YA novels: Un amore sul Gange and Il segreto del Canyon.

She worked as an editor for various publishing houses in Italy and since 1993 has mainly translated children's books. Among the authors she translated are: Philip Ridley, Melvin Burgess, Carl Sandburg, David Grossman, Jerry Spinelli, Anthony Horowitz, Eoin Colfer, Margaret Mahy, Joyce Carol Oates, Richard Wright, Mervyn Peake, J.K. Rowling, and many others. For her work as a translator she received the Andersen-Baia delle Favole Prize in 1995 as best translator; and in 2004 her name was included in the Ibby's List of Honor as the first Italian translator included on their list.

An article on translating, “Tradurre: un mestiere o un'arte?" (Translation: a craft or an art?), was published by the university magazine Kykčion and, in an abridged version, by the magazine Liber (April-May 2001). Another essay, "La sfida del traduttore“ (The Translator's Challenge) was published in the magazine Nae (year VII, n ° 24, Autumn 2008); and, the same year again in Liber. Her article "Traduttrice Traditrice. Come passare dal tradurre a scrivere storie" (Translator/Writer) exploring the process of going from translating to writing stories " was published in October 2012 in Liber.
