George P. Davis III

George is a native West Virginian, originally from Beckley, and is a graduate of Marshall University. He is a retired Army Military Intelligence Major having served from 1967 to 1987, first as an enlisted man and, later as an officer after attending Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia.

He was commissioned in Military Intelligence in 1970 and was soon selected to attend flight school, both rotary and fixed wing flight schools, and spent almost half of his career in aviation. His tours of duty included: Vietnam where he flew OV-1 Mohawk reconnaissance airplanes for the 131st Military Intelligence Company (Aerial Surveillance) (MICAS ) over North Vietnam and Laos and UH-1H Huey helicopters for D Troop/17th Air Cavalry; 131st MICAS at Fort Hood, Texas; Camp Humphreys, Korea where he commanded a Military Intelligence Aviation Company flying border surveillance in Mohawks over the DMZ; and two tours in the Pentagon with the Defense Intelligence Agency. Afterwards he spent 23 years as a government contractor supporting various agencies within the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Major Davis retired in 2011 and has since devoted all of his efforts towards helping veterans. He is constantly contacted by veterans in need and assists them with their VA disability claims, with short-term financial aid for things such as rent, utilities, medical bills and anything else where they need assistance. He has assisted thousands of veterans throughout north central WV and southern PA with their VA disability claims and several hundred with emergency financial support (utilities, rent, food, medicine, furniture and a host of other needs.) He supports the Fairmont State University’s Veteran Assistance Office and sponsors their Veteran’s Lounge. As a result they named their Veteran’s Lounge after him. He supports the Clarksburg VA hospital’s ICU waiting area and the Women’s Clinic at the VA with all of the necessary supplies for new mothers. Through the WV State DAV he supports the WV Veteran’s Nursing Home in Clarksburg with money for them to take their monthly trips to the movies, mall or shows. He works with all of the other Veteran Service Organizations throughout the state as well as the WV Department of Veterans Assistance and other government-funded agencies to provide support when necessary.

He is a highly decorated, disabled veteran rated at 100% by the VA and DoD. He was awarded the DoD Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Air Medal with Numeral 9, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star for Valor, many other awards and Senior Army Aviator Wings. He is the Commander of the local DAV Chapter 45 (North Central WV serving seven counties); Service Officer with Fairmont VFW Post 629; a member of the Marion County Veterans Council, the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, West Virginia Military Retirees Council, Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association and the OV-1 Mohawk Association. He served on the Marion County Honor Guard for 10 years providing final respects to our area’s veterans. He has served for seven years on Congressman David McKinley’s Veteran Advisory Council and has worked closely with the Congressman on veteran-related legislation. He is a member of the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center Veterans Advisory Council and on the Veteran’s Advisory Council for Senator Joe Manchin. He is also a member of Acacia Lodge 157 AF&AM, Chapter, Commandery and Shrine.

George and his wife Kelly reside in Fairmont and are members of the Mount Harmony Community Church. George is also an avid bass fisherman.
