Stan Ransom was born in 1928 and served in the Army of Occupation in Japan in World War II. He graduated from Yale University in 195l and Columbia University School of Library Service in 1953 He was Director of the Huntington Public Library from 1956-1974 and President of the New York Library Association in 1972-73.. During that time he researched the life and poetry of Jupiter Hammon, first Black Poet to publish his own poems. Stan's newest book, "America's First Black Poet; Jupiter Hammon of Long Island" was published in 2020. In 1970 Stan created Black Poetry Day on October 17th, Hammon's birthday, to honor Black poets and Jupiter Hammon. Stan also founded the Olympic Museum in 1979 in Lake Placid, NY. He is a folk musician and storyteller, and lives in Plattsburgh, NY with his wife, also a librarian.
