Muninder Kaur Ahluwalia, Ph.D. was born in New York City to immigrant, social justice oriented Indian parents. She began her career as a counselor and then earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from New York University in 2002. She is a Professor and Co-Coordinator of the Counseling Programs in the Department of Counseling at Montclair State University. Dr. Ahluwalia is a Fellow of the Society of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association (APA), a recipient of the O’hana Award from Counselors for Social Justice of the American Counseling Association, and is past chair of the Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs of the APA. She has served on the Editorial Boards for the Asian American Journal of Psychology, Journal for Social Action in Counseling and Psychology, and Training and Education in Professional Psychology. Dr. Ahluwalia co-authored with Dr. Rebecca L. Toporek on their new book titled, Taking action: Creating social change through strength, solidarity, strategy and sustainability. Dr. Ahluwalia engages in scholarship focusing on intersecting identities of racial and ethnic minorities in the U.S., with particular attention to the psychological impact of racism and discrimination on individuals and communities, including her own Sikh community. She also has a consultation practice where she conducts multicultural competence assessment and training.
