Carlos Sapochnik

Carlos Sapochnik was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and has lived in London since 1968. Over the years he has grappled with photography, architecture, graphic design, printmaking, kendo, publishing, teaching, drawing, organizational consultancy, couple psychotherapy, group relations conferences, and research. He trained at the Royal College of Art, the Tavistock Clinic, and Goldsmith's Department of English and Comparative Literature where he completed a doctoral project on observing, forgetting, and representing groups. He has published ‘Group Relations and other meditations: Psychoanalytic inquiries into the uncertainties of experiential learning’ (2021) for the Tavistock Series.

Carlos writes, translates, illustrates, and designs his books published by the Alltogethernow Press, a studio he originally set up in 1973 to design and print posters for independent London theatres, many of which feature in the Theatre Poster Collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. Since 2018 the Press has published his first book of poetry, six books of bilingual English/Castilian poetry, three books of short fiction pieces, and one of drawings. His next fiction title, ‘A season at the Asklepion’ will be published in the summer of 2026.

Representation as translation is one of the points of concern in his work, which begins on the page in one of three representational codes – English, Spanish, or Drawing. These may then interact with one another as a sequence of translations, retranslations, and iterative revisions until the writing and drawing come to a standstill. As Valéry has suggested, a text is never finished, only abandoned.
