My love of history and reading made it easy for me to choose a liberal arts education after graduating high school in the Deep South. In college however, my aptitude in science and mathematics steered me toward things more technical and certainly more financially secure. Stories came to me anyway and I began to outline what would become full-length romance novels. Friends read the manuscripts and encouraged me to look for a real publisher, to avoid the hype from vanity publishers and the temptation to self-publish. A tenured university professorship now allows me to devote more time to pursue my first love—writing stories that others might want to read. Jenny B. and Bring the Curious Midwife (Solstice Publishing) are two books I am especially proud of. For me, writing is an additional job and one I take seriously, not something I do for enjoyment. Writing simply for enjoyment rarely produces anything that someone will pay to read. The E.L. Doctorow quote describing writing as a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia might apply to me. Putting a story together can drive me out of both my minds.
