Roya Q. Scales, PhD, is a Professor of Literacy Education at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. She is noted for her research on thoughtfully adaptive teaching, enactment of teachers’ visions, literacy teacher education, and effective literacy teaching. Roya enjoys collaborating with colleagues across the United States to pursue large-scale studies related to literacy teacher education and effective teaching. She has published widely from those collaborations, with three of those collaborative articles receiving research awards. In 2022, she received the ALER A.B. Herr Award for outstanding contributions to literacy education.
Roya teaches several literacy courses including Reading Methods, Reading Diagnosis & Instruction, Language Arts Methods, and Literacy Leadership. She also teaches M.A.Ed. Research Methods. She is Editor for Reading & Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties.
Roya enjoys hiking in the beautiful North Carolina mountains and she journals about her trail adventures. Sometimes she is inspired to journal while sitting on a boulder in a river. Roya reads for pleasure each day.
