I am a poet, singer-songwriter, musician, and avid outdoors enthusiast. My writing reflects my love for the natural world from which I draw my inspiration. For thirty years my vocation has been teaching high school English, but my numerous avocations include a wide range of outdoor activities combined with playing acoustic folk music and singing songs (including many original songs). As a writer, I have published several books including a four novella series, a book length creative nonfiction memoir, two poetry volumes, a volume of outdoor essays, as well as numerous scholarly essays and journalistic feature stories, A brief visit to my website at moenkopimemories dot org offers links to all of my writing. I think you'll find there is something unique and interesting to read for almost anyone who visits my site.
My educational background includes an undergraduate degree in English/Writing from Western State University of Colorado, teacher certifications from Mesa State University of Colorado and Westminster College of Salt Lake City, and a masters degree in Writing/Creative Nonfiction from Southern New Hampshire University. As a high school English teacher I taught students in 9th grade through 12th grade in courses ranging from Fundamental English all the way to Advanced Placement Literature and Language and International Baccalaureate English.
I retired from teaching in 2021 and now spend time writing, playing music, and enjoying the outdoors with my wife who I've been married to for 32 years. My next book, which continues to celebrate the creative journey of both an educator and a lover of the natural world, will be published in early 2027.
