I love books, but it’s actually a bit weird for me to be called an author. Although I can spend hours and hours appreciating the work of a true master, it’s always been clear to me that I should stay in my lane when it comes to this discipline. I have taken many courses in creative writing and editing at university, and I’ve seen what absolute literary beasts are out there. Were I to create something having the chance to be worthwhile, my domain would have to be non-fiction and I’d really need to have something to say, I reckoned.

I ended up writing Managing Weight and Health because I felt I had to. I don’t have many answers to the questions of life, but I do know a lot about how to manage a few physical parameters: weight, health, performance and appearance. This knowledge should be available to anyone who wants to gain control of their own parameters, I believe. The opposite of control of these factors usually looks like depression, low self-esteem and anxiety. My belief is that a fundamental level of health and sense of control remediates these burdens.

I have an MA in English literature and an MS in education, both from Stockholm university. In 2009 I won the Swedish sub-junior nationals in bench press, and seven years later I managed to pass the 200 kg (440 lbs) mark for the first time. While working towards that milestone, I also started learning about altering my appearance at will. It only took one men’s physique competition for me to find out that it’s not for me. All the same, the experience still taught me what it feels like, physically and mentally, to be very lean and, crucially, what it ‘costs’ to become and stay very lean
