Gareth Cartman

Gareth is a cycling historian and writer. He first fell in love with road cycling watching Channel 4 footage of Marco Pantani dancing away from his competitors in the Tour de France, and then when living in Paris, watching Lance Armstrong not win the Tour seven times on the Champs Elysees. His first book, We Rode All Day, was a huge success, telling the story of the 1919 Tour de France in the riders' own voices, painstakingly assembled from interviews and biographies. Since then, he has published Walko, the story of Roger Walkowiak's unlikely 1956 Tour win, and Koblet + Kubler, the story of the intertwining fates of Switzerland's greatest ever cyclists. His latest book, We Rode All Night, follows on from his first book, and tells how the 1926 Tour de France unfolded - the longest and hardest ever edition of the Tour. Gareth can be found on his bike, pedalling slowly up the Chiltern hills or even more slowly on the cobbled Flanders hills.
