After a series of hospitalizations and a lot of bad behavior, George Hofmann managed to overcome the worst of bipolar disorder by adding practices in focused attention to the usual therapies of medicine and talk. He works to show others with anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder how to do the same.
His experience includes years of life dragged down by psychotic mania and suicide attempts. Periods of meteoric success were decimated by times of near poverty. People were hurt, friendships damaged and money squandered. Then George began to apply the methods he writes about and teaches. He has lived since 2007 free of significant episodes of mania, depression or anxiety.
He advocates for meditation, movement and meaningful work as necessary for a good life and has conducted workshops for individuals, support groups, doctors and corporations. George’s methods come from his own experience as well as training with leading meditation teachers.
He lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his wife, their daughter and two poorly behaved dogs. George can be found at: www.practicingmentalillness.com.
