In 1984 Braam and his brother narrowly and miraculously escaped death when the mast of their friend’s catamaran touched an over headed power line at Swart Vlei in the Eastern Cape. Braam was standing on the yacht whilst his brother and friend were dragging the yacht on the trailer towards the water when the aluminium mast came in contact with the 11 000 volt power line running alongside the lake. Braam, initially unhurt, jumped of the yacht and turned around to try and save his brother when the power also struck him.
