Meeka Caldwell is an active presence in local and national Down Syndrome organizations. She began her advocacy shortly after her son, Anian, was born with Down Syndrome and she noticed a deafening silence around the needs of Black and Brown people within the disability community. In an effort to expand the literature that embraces and highlights the diverse stories of children and families within the Down Syndrome community, Meeka published her first children’s book, A Friend Like Anian. The book shows how positive community interaction fosters a greater understanding of people with disabilities. The First Day of School was released in 2021, with additional titles forthcoming in the series, including French Fries and Blue (2022). Her passion is to ensure people with complex medical needs and disabilities are seen, heard, and valued. In addition, her writings promote acceptance and education to end biases and misconceptions around Down Syndrome.
Meeka is a Society for Human Resources Management—Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and Professional in Human Resources (PHR). She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland University College.
Meeka lives in Upper Marlboro with her husband, and they have six children.
