Robert L. Longyear III

Robert Longyear is the author of Innovating for Wellness (New Degree Press), a book that explores the intersection of health policy and health technology innovation. His second book, A Virtual Care Blueprint (Routledge), provides a deep dive into telehealth and remote patient monitoring (RPM) with the goal of objective evaluation of these important care models in light of Covid-19.

Robert has worked across the healthcare industry for a number of organizations including Medicaid Health Plans of America in policy analysis, Wellcare Health Plans in clinical quality improvement, and the Institute for Medicaid Innovation (IMI). At the Institute for Medicaid Innovation, he led two projects in conjunction with major Medicaid health plans looking at national best practices in high-risk care coordination and social determinants of health data collection at the point of Medicaid enrollment. In his career in health technology, Robert was Director of Product at a pharmacy-focused mHealth technology company where he took the company to a contract with the United States Air Force and lead the submission of several NIH SBIR grant proposals. In biotechnology, Robert worked for Synergene Therapeutics, while in school, studying the pharmacokinetics of nanotechnology-delivered p53 gene therapy in solid tumors. Robert has consulted for several innovative biotechnology and digital health companies from start-ups to market leaders.

His research work has been published by the Institute for Medicaid Innovation, NEJM Catalyst, and the American Psychological Association Practice Innovations (Accepted). His work primarily focuses on innovations in healthcare delivery and care management as well as the application of digital health technologies to healthcare services, broadly. His primary area of expertise is remote-patient monitoring and the use of digital experiences to solve problems in healthcare services.

Robert hosts a weekly live webinar series with Dr. Faisel Syed, Head of Primary Care, at ChenMed where they discuss key topics in healthcare innovation such as the full-risk primary care model, Medicare Advantage for all, virtual care, telemedicine, the social determinants of health, and care coordination for high-risk patients.

He graduated cum laude from Georgetown University with a degree in Healthcare Management and Policy, where he completed his thesis on innovative payment and care delivery system reform efforts in state Medicaid programs—specifically, innovative state adaptations of the ACO model stemming from the Medicare Shared Savings Program. At Georgetown, Robert also received his national certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.

At age 20, his mom's chronic myeloid leukemia spiraled out of control and he became a caregiver for a high-risk patient with multiple chronic conditions as she fought for her life. The 6 months spent navigating the healthcare system provided the best education possible. This experience provides a dual view of healthcare from both the patient and system perspectives.
