Andy Lawrence

I am the Regius Professor of Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, working at the beautiful and historic Royal Observatory Edinburgh. My main passion is quasars - exotic and powerful objects at the centres of galaxies powered by supermassive black holes. With Catherine Heymans I run a popular MOOC - AstroTech: The Science and Technology behind Astronomical Discovery. I have published two textbooks and a historical pamphlet about my multi-talented but controversial Victorian predecessor, Charles Piazzi Smyth.
