Brian Tissot

Dr. Brian Tissot is a marine ecologist and professor living in the Pacific NW. As a scientist and surfer, he has explored the world’s waves and oceans and led pioneering research, publishing widely in scientific journals, and appeared in films and popular media. While science taught Brian how the world works, science fiction allows him to explore how the world could work. Through imagined futures, distant planets, and unfamiliar civilizations, he asks questions that science alone cannot answer. For Brian, science fiction is not an escape from reality. It is an act of hope. It stretches the imagination beyond the limits of the present and invites readers to envision better paths forward. It provides a way to wander through the tangled jungle of political, social, ethical, and spiritual questions that define our species. Most importantly, it offers another story—a vision of humanity connected once again to the Earth, to one another, and to the deeper currents that bind all life together.

The ocean first taught him to imagine worlds beyond the horizon. Science helped him understand them. Science fiction gives him a way to help create them.
