Denise VanBriggle, K-University literacy professional, National Writing Project teacher-consultant and former director of The Capital Area Writing Project at Penn State, spends most days exploring the power of various expressive arts to act as change agents, perspective shifters, and resilience builders in her own life and the lives of others. She owns a small business specializing in writing and wellness workshops to meet the needs of diverse clients. Denise is a poet and writer who understands the healing, transformative nature of words that emanate directly from one’s soul. She lives in Central Pennsylvania with her husband Phil and rescue dog Jake, and feels fortunate to have her daughter Erika, son-in-law Jesse, and grandchildren Max, Emma, Avery, and son Adam living nearby.
Denise collaborated with Jimmy Santiago Baca and Kym Sheehan on a teaching tool titled Feeding the Roots of Self-Expression and Freedom (Teachers College Press, 2018). Her poetry and writing have appeared in The Wildwood Journal (HACC), Tarnhelm (Penn State University) and Survive and Thrive (St. Cloud University).
