Joni Wickham grew up in the tobacco fields of eastern North Carolina, a long way from any government building or high-profile political campaign. She was the first in her family to receive a college education, which she credits with helping her overcome the barriers of socioeconomic hardship. Joni’s personal story is a fascinating glimpse into generational poverty. Her professional experience is a case study in how women can overcome low expectations and push through feelings of impostor syndrome to carve out a unique place in leadership.
Joni led initiatives within state and federal government, as well as advocacy organizations, before moving to Kansas City in 2011. After working on former Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Sly James’ staff, she became the Chief of Staff soon after becoming a mother. She is an accomplished political strategist and negotiator, communications expert and organizational leader. Joni was motivated to create a first-of-its kind women’s empowerment initiative which has been implemented in several major cities.
Joni received a BA in Political Studies from Meredith College and a master’s in political science from University of Missouri. She was the recipient of the 2019 Mel Carnahan Public Service Award from the University of Missouri Truman School of Public Affairs. She co-founded Wickham James Strategies & Solutions in 2019 with former Mayor Sly James. They use their experience and expertise to partner with clients and achieve results by communicating complex issues, advancing cutting-edge public policy, mediating challenging disputes, and navigating political environments and government institutions.
Joni lives in Kansas City with her two-legged and four-legged family. The Thin Line Between Cupcake and Bitch is Joni’s first book. She also speaks across the United States on topics including women’s leadership, campaigns and politics, strategic communications, public policy and organizational leadership.
