Susan Tate Ankeny left a career in teaching to research and write the story of her father’s escape from Nazi-occupied France, resulting in the 2020 publication of The Girl and the Bombardier: A True Story of Resistance and Rescue in Nazi-Occupied France. Her recently released book, American Flygirl: The True Story of Hazel Ying Lee, Who Followed Her Dream Against All the Odds-and Became an American Hero, is about a larger-than-life personality who broke down racial and gender barriers to become the first Asian American woman fighter pilot during World War II.
