Pierre and Cynthia met in an elevator in Bangladesh in 2004. Since then, they have followed each other studying economic development, and searching for new adventures in culture, food, and wine. Cynthia Howson is a Senior Lecturer in Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies at the University of Washington Tacoma. Her love of travel and asking nosy questions has allowed her to meet amazing people and tell their stories. In addition to China, her field research has taken her to Senegal, The Gambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She has a Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, UK, and a Masters from Sciences Po, Bordeaux in France.
Pierre Ly is an Associate Professor of International Political Economy at the University of Puget Sound, where he teaches a popular course about the Idea of Wine. He has a Ph.D. in Economics from the Toulouse School of Economics in France. He enjoys repeatedly failing to improve his Mandarin on the internet.
