David L Haun

David L. Haun has always loved to read and write. His love of stories started at age two when his older sister Lela would read him stories from children’s picture books.

In elementary school, when he’d walked up the hill home, his mother often was waiting for him with a cookie, swinging on her front porch swing. (She no doubt was waiting, watching him come, checking to be sure he didn’t get himself in trouble on the way.)

He would tell her about his adventures of the day as they swung on the swing. They’d tell made-up childish stories to each other, sometimes sing silly songs, or compose even sillier poems. One of the poems he remembers the two of them composing was a poem about a rabbit that hopped by. It went something like:

There goes a bunny rabbit hopping down the street.

He’s pretty fat and looks good enough to eat.

But I’m too young, and I can’t cook,

So, all I can do is swing here and look.

After moving to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, his favorite classes in school were when his English teachers would have everyone read assigned books, or write short stories.

In college, he studied to become a pastor in a local church. Preparing sermons each week helped develop his writing skills.

Serving twelve years as a local pastor first in South Carolina, and then, Oklahoma, David decided he needed more education in the area of Family Life and Child Development.

He enrolled in the doctoral program at Oklahoma State University. His doctoral dissertation studied how bereaved families deal with death and the value of support by both clergy and funeral directors. As a result of his research, Dr. Haun testified on two occasions before the Federal Trade Commission on the practices of the funeral industry.

After graduation, he accepted the invitation of his home church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to become their Senior pastor. He served the congregation for eighteen years, and then, in retirement spent additional years serving as an interim pastor in churches needing a preacher.

Since his retirement, David has written a children’s picture book, JACK AND THE REALLY BIG BEANSTALK, and shared with his brother in writing an examination of the Christmas characters at the birth of Jesus, titled THE ADVENT BOOK. He currently is working with artists on two additional children’s books. A book titled “THE OLD PREACHER’S BEST BATHROOM BOOK” is coming out soon. A book describing God’s miracles during David’s sixty years of ministry is in final editing and will be out soon as well. Finally, two other children’s Christmas books are expected to be out by Christmas 2020.

David and his wife Twylah live in John Knox Village, a retirement community in Pompano Beach, Florida.
