Alan Haynes

Alan Haynes is a professor of mathematics at the University of Houston, where he serves as Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Mathematics, and co-managing editor of the Houston Journal of Mathematics. He earned his PhD in 2006 from the University of Texas at Austin and has held academic positions at five universities in the United States and the United Kingdom, supervising undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students throughout his career.

Alongside his research and teaching, Dr. Haynes has spent years coaching and mentoring elementary, middle, and high school students in contest mathematics — including three of his own children. From 2014 to 2016 he organized and led a biweekly problem-solving course for high school students in York, England, and in 2016 he taught a masterclass for the Royal Institution aimed at middle and high school–age students. From 2021 to 2023 he served as organizer, coach, and teacher for the Mathletes program and after-school math club at Colony Meadows Elementary School in Sugar Land, Texas. Many of the students he has coached have gone on to compete in state and national math competitions.
