I began by writing books for the very narrow niche market of new church development -- Mainline Manifesto, and The Artist's Way of Preaching, in a nod to Julia Cameron. Creating Core Values in a New Congregation was basically a core values retreat in booklet form. Finally the handbook: Connectional New Church Development. Then my personal stuff followed, my jazz book on the Great American Songbook, my memoir -- of the crazy days-- Boomed, and what started as Charlie's Little Book, a gift to him on his wedding day, lived on to become It's Not About the Money.

Lately I've been writing more from the heart. My prison memoir, Inmate, describes my six months in a federal prison. When I finally got back to home, I was overwhelmed with the fecundity (look it up) of nature exploding all around us as Spring got going. So began my Book of Wonders. It occurred to me one day to combine my two favorite activities, writing and playing guitar in a novel way. So I began another memoir, written about the over 100 guitars I've known and played, and all the stories they got me into, The Old Man with Guitars.
