Sandra Arnau-Dewar Ph.D.

"Meticulously researched and skillfully written, Arnau-Dewar’s memoir does double duty as a brutally frank instructional guide for parents of children with ADHD," Booklife Reviews.

When my husband and I adopted Cindy at two days and Eric at ten days, I was unaware that adopted children have twice the rate of ADHD and conduct problems as non-adopted children. I also didn't know that parents of children with ADHD are nearly twice as likely to divorce as parents of children without ADHD. I did know that I was catapulted into a terrifying world where my children's impulsive, accident-prone behavior led to many emergency room visits.

My memoir, Desperately Seeking Novelty, follows my journey from stressed and bewildered parent to passionate advocate for a new name and new understanding of ADHD. Along the way, I also was diagnosed with ADHD, which gave me the courage to return to college after a 30-year "vacation."

I have a B.A. in English and Print Journalism and a M.F.A. in Creative Writing. In 2011, I was awarded a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from the University of North Dakota.
