Gordon Edgar

Gordon Edgar has been photographing railways in Britain and around the world since 1968, and he has specialised in capturing the last of the industrial steam locomotives at work in their true gritty industrial environment. Gordon, as well as a prolific author, is also an accomplished photographer, specialising in main line steam in action, and his work is regularly published in railway periodicals. As well as writing and illustrating his own books, he also contributes to the work of other authors, including the Times books published by HarperCollins, written by Julian Holland. Gordon's first published title was 'China - The World's Last Steam Railway', a photographic essay released in 2008 and co-authored with friends Adrian Freeman and John Tickner, the photography portrayed within achieved following many visits by the three photographers to the far and wide provinces of China, and especially in the depths of severe winters in North East China and Inner Mongolia Gordon has since gone on to have eighteen titles published, including a series of ten books examining industrial railways in the various regions around mainland Britain over the last fifty years. Widely travelled, Gordon's latest titles look at steam in action around the world over the last three decades photographed during his many travels, supported by contributions from other accomplished photographers. Gordon is married and has two children and five grandchildren. After two separate careers, the first of over two decades in the the military, followed by roles in intermodal logistics solutions design and operational management, he now enjoys retirement with his wife, Valerie, in North Yorkshire.
