Dr. Ramy Harik, a Fulbright Scholar, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Carolina (USC) and a resident researcher at the McNAIR Aerospace Center. He is an affiliated research scientist in Automated Fiber Placement at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley in the ISAAC team. His education joins Mechanical Engineering (Master’s of Engineering) from the Lebanese University ULFGII (Roumieh, Lebanon) and Automated Manufacturing Engineering Technology (Master’s of Science) and Industrial/Mechanical Engineering (Doctor of Philosophy) from the University of Lorraine (Nancy, France).
Dr. Harik has approximately taught Manufacturing Processes over 20 times on three different continents! That does not include other courses such as Computer Aided Manufacturing, Prototyping, Advanced Manufacturing, Quality Control, Ergonomics, and other manufacturing related topics. This multicultural immersion in different education environments and observation of multiple educational setups enabled him to perform continuous improvement on his teaching delivery methods. This book represents the culmination of these teaching experiences and interactions with the students of the University of Lorraine, Lebanese American University, and USC, his current tenure home. Since 2016, his average student rating (filled by over 300 students over 5 semesters) taking the manufacturing class is 4.96, 4.99, 4.97, 5, and 5. This demonstrates his passion to the students and the topic, leading him to receive the 2016 Outstanding Young Educator Award from Pi Tau Sigma Honor Society at USC and the 2018 Samuel Litman Distinguished Professor Award from the College of Engineering and Computing at USC.
Dr. Harik has created endless undergraduate and graduate programs to complement the in-class learning experience for students, such as the McNAIR Junior Fellows Undergraduate Research program at USC, now in its fourth year with over 50 fellows. These numerous activities (from over 100 field trips to industry to ABET Accreditation Platforms) demonstrate his fundamental belief in the education of the whole person, in and out of the classroom.
Dr. Harik has over $3 million in funding from NASA, Boeing, SCDoC, Toray, Fokker, SCRA, and other agencies. He held visiting positions at Purdue University and NASA Langley (USA) and Ecole Centrale de Nantes and UTC Compiegne (France). He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in international journals and conferences with over 1000 citations to date. Dr. Harik was the chair of CAD’10 and the PLM’16 International Conferences.
