Kendra is a marketing communication specialist, author, and disability spokesperson. She shares about what it is like living life with a rare disease. At age four, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Mucopolysaccharide Type VI also known as Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome (MPS VI). Having MPS means that Kendra is missing an enzyme that is needed to cleanse her cells. The missing enzyme is needed to break down a gluey like substance within the cell. The buildup that is produced affects connective tissue, heart, lungs, eyes and other vital organs. With the help of weekly infusions, Kendra is thriving and breaking down barriers for others with disabilities.
Kendra always sees the positive in life, and in helping others. She holds a bachelor’s degree in both psychology and sociology. She enjoys writing because it allows her to express herself and share her experiences with others. Through her writing, her hope is that readers understand that life is full of adversity and that life’s ups and downs shouldn’t stop anyone from reaching for their dreams. Although having a disability is hard at times, Kendra knows how to live life to the fullest; she makes lemonade when life gives her lemons!
