Place this ability in a hospice setting where the boundaries between life and death are blurred and you might have the opportunity to experience a profound spiritual transition. Michael was present when his friend died and felt his transformation. An immeasurable love was present amidst this sacred moment. Words were not adequate to explain the sublime spiritual presence that day. But this experience became the heart of a passage from Michael’s first novel, Dark Horizon. In this excerpt, the thirty-seven-year-old protagonist, Sherry Whittington, is by her Grandfather’s side as he is dying in the local hospice.

Grandfather’s erratic breathing resonated in the silence that consumed them. For within this last communion, Sherry was awash with the sacredness of the moment. Most people have never experienced what she felt, for when the soul left the physical body and entered the spiritual realm, there could be no fear. It cannot exist in a domain of total love. Spirituality encompassed her, and she peacefully accepted it. Accepted the warmth in her soul. And if she could have seen what she felt, it would have been a white light amidst a host of angels.

On earth, we are bound by our senses. If you hear something, then it’s real. You don’t deny it. The same for sight, smell, touch, and taste. In the physical world we experience through the senses yet receive only a fraction of that which is possible. Knowing so little, we think we walk on true ground. But in God’s realm there is communication on many levels. You must feel the presence, experience the understanding. And then, you know.

The wholeness of total love warmed her soul, and now, Sherry understood.
