Lisa King

Lisa King is a visual artist, poet, and musician. She is the vocalist and bassist for The Hot Place. In 2015 the band released their debut album, The Language of Birds, on her independent label No Big Wheel Records. Her paintings and etchings have been exhibited nationally and internationally, with her work residing in the collections of Academy Award winning special effects artists Kit West (Return of the Jedi, Dune, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire of the Sun) and John Baker (The Cell, The Matrix Reloaded); musicians Denny Walley (The Magic Band) and Jeff Calder (The Swimming Pool Q’s); and the late record producer/painter David Anderle, (Frank Zappa, Van Dyke Parks, The Doors, Love, and Brian Wilson). In 2016, her band collaborated on a series of Living Room Shows with David J, founding member and bassist of British goth/post-punk bands Bauhaus & Love and Rockets. The Hot Place is currently recording a new album to be released in 2019, and her next art project is a hand painted tarot deck, The Bent Twig Tarot, based on dreams and real life encounters with the surreal—influenced by the psychedelic stylings of The Incredible String Band. Lisa resides in Atlanta, with her vast collection of houseplants, vintage guitars, and her favorite Smith-Corona typewriter. She is an Etsy crafter, and you can visit her metaphysical shop online, Wax & Wane: A Cabinet of Curiosities.

Dark Queens and Their Quarry is the first collection of poems from Lisa King. Influenced by the work of Robert Bly, Aleister Crowley, Carl Jung, and Joseph Campbell, Dark Queens is a seasonal journey, which addresses the Mother Wound through mythological storytelling and archetypal imagery. Lisa's rhythmic style and hallucinogenic visions are reminiscent of her Beat, Rock & Roll, Decadent, and Surrealist influences. The two-folio compilation of “Boneshadows of Motherskin 2017-2019” and “Hot Rod Butterfly 2000-2014” are presented in 93 full-color pages with 59 poems. In the tradition of William Blake, the collection is accompanied by a series of six illustrations, inked and penciled by Ms. King. This special edition, independently published by No Big Wheel Press & Publishing House, is edited by musician and writer Jeff Calder.
