Oronzo Cilli

Oronzo Cilli is an author, essayist, lecturer, and scholar of the biography and academic work of J. R. R. Tolkien. He is the author of Tolkien’s Library: An Annotated Checklist (Luna Press Publishing, 2019; revised ed. 2023), with a foreword by Tom Shippey and an afterword by Verlyn Flieger. The volume won the Best Book award at the The Tolkien Society Awards 2020 and was among the five finalists for the Mythopoeic Society Awards 2021 in the United States—on both occasions the first and only Italian recipient.

He edited the second Italian edition of The Annotated Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien (Bompiani, 2004) and published Tolkien l’esperantista (Cafagna Editore, 2017), in both Italian and English, together with Arden Smith and Patrick Wynne, with a foreword by John Garth. He also authored Tolkien e l’Italia (Il Cerchio, 2016), with a foreword by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond.

In 2023 he published Guida completa al mondo di Tolkien (Vallardi), with a foreword by John Howe and an afterword by Brian Sibley. In spring 2026 his research essay, “A Thousand Leaves from One Tree: The History of G. B. Smith’s Poetry,” will appear in the volume J. R. R. Tolkien and G. B. Smith: With the Wind in Our Ears (Palgrave Macmillan), edited by Giuseppe Pezzini, Fellow and Tutor at Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

He has delivered papers at numerous conferences devoted to Tolkien in Italy, the United Kingdom (Oxford and Birmingham), and Spain (Salamanca). His articles have appeared in specialist and academic journals, including the Journal of Inklings Studies published by University of St Andrews, and have been translated into English, French, Japanese, German, Portuguese, and Esperanto.

He is regarded as one of the world’s leading collectors of Tolkien-related materials and is a former president of the Associazione Collezionisti Tolkieniani Italiani. He curated the exhibition Tolkien. Uomo Professore Autore, promoted by the Ministero della Cultura (Italy) and hosted in Rome (Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Nov. 2023–Feb. 2024), Naples (Palazzo Reale di Napoli, Mar.–Jul. 2024), Venaria Reale (Reggia di Venaria, Oct. 2024–Jan. 2025), Catania (Palazzo della Cultura di Catania, Feb.–Jul. 2025), and Trieste (Salone degli Incanti, Sept. 2025–Jan. 2026).
