For many years I lived and worked in Key West, so it was natural for me to think of the island as a haven for my characters. The fishing is world class, the temperature is comfortable, even in summer, and the island could be easily converted to self-sufficiency.

I left Key West to go back to Kentucky to take care of my mother until she passed, and my wonderful husband passed, too. It was devastating. I busied myself with my Border collies, and renovating a historic home on the Ohio River, but the river couldn't replace Key West in my heart. Unfortunately, Key West had gotten too expensive to return to, so I looked around the globe for a place that had beautiful water, uncrowded beaches and good fishing.

I ended up in Chuburna Puerto, in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. Here on the Gulf side we are safer from hurricanes than the Caribbean side, and the pace is slower because of less tourists. There are lots of expats here, though, and I don't feel so isolated.

It's very safe here, too, in spite of what you might hear about parts of Mexico in the northwest areas of the country. It is the perfect place to sit back, watch the water - and write.

I started out to write a simple story of survival that has turned into three books. The third one, Earth Struggles, is going to be finished in August with any luck! But that book, and the turn of world events, has me thinking about a fourth book, so we'll see!
