After leaving the British Army in 1976 and studying business management at INSEAD, Gilbert Greenall trained as a doctor. A qualified pilot, a skill needed during his first job in Africa, his career spans 40 years in the management of humanitarian emergencies and post conflict recovery, working, amongst others, in Sierra Leone, East Timor, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. A member of the United Nations Disaster, Assessment and Coordination Team since 1997, Gilbert was appointed CBE in 1993 and awarded an honorary doctorate in Medicine by the University of Bristol in 2006.
