Janine Crist has lived in the Atlanta area for most of her life. She's traveled up and down the roads mentioned in this book many times, commingling her own memories with the stories of the Mecaslins, the Mullins and the Maguires.
Her favorite aspect of writing this book has been the moments where she could stand and "be" in the places where these characters lived their lives—Mecaslin once held land where the Grady Memorial Hospital now sits, as well as the produce market on Decatur Street where Georgia State University now exists. She's hunted for and found likely sites of the railroad amidst concrete slabs and new buildings and looks forward to finding more.
