Andy Buchan was a police officer for almost 30 years, carrying out numerous roles from beat officer through traffic patrol and finally achieving the rank of sergeant. As a custody officer he found he understood the way autistic people thought whilst they were in his cells. It was around that time he was diagnosed with Aspergers and Dyspraxia. Finally he understood why it was the world around him was out of sync.
By working with the autistic, learning disability and neurodiverse communities around the UK through his dedicated police role he learned how their interaction with the emergency services could be greatly improved by simple techniques that he did intuitively on a daily basis.
AUTISM AND THE POLICE is a culmination of all Andy's extensive experience, which he has used to develop real world strategies for officers and first responders to recognise and deal with any vulnerable person (not just autistic) appropriately in everyday situations.
