David Michael Dunaway was born in 1946 in the small town of Brewton, Alabama. He was educated in the Alabama Public Schools eventually earning a doctorate in educational leadership from Auburn where his dissertation on search and seizure in public schools was selected as the best in the program in 1985. David - generally know as Mickey - prospered in a 50-year career in public education at the K-12 and university levels. He was elected as the president of the Alabama Principal's Association in 1991. He has worked at all levels of K-12 education across Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, and North Carolina. Upon his retirement from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte he was presented with Associate Professor Emeritus status.
