About the Author: Carol Ross Starr - Canadian-American writer.

I grew up in the far north and the Canadian west. In the North, winters are long, dark and very cold, so summers are precious. I learned to delight in the small things of nature during the short summer season. This was a gift from my father who showed us little miracles in the woods and lakeshore, seeing where buttercups grow and watching fish swimming in the green depths below our dock.

The family moved frequently. After the north, we lived in a small group of 6 company houses on the side of a mountain in the Canadian Cascades. There were bears across the valley and trout in the clear brook. Then we moved to a smelter city on the cold, powerful Columbia River.

Later, in New Jersey, I finished high school, then earned a BFA in pottery. I worked as a draftsman and later as a potter, then went back to school for my M/Arch and became an architect. I got to be involved in some fascinating restoration projects in New York City.

I like Haiku poems because they are short and deal with the natural world. In haiku every word counts. Haiku tends to focus on the beautiful and the positive, a quality sometimes forgotten today.

I retired to North Carolina where I live with my husband and our dog.

Now I have time to write.
