Gil Pasternak

Gil Pasternak is Professor of Photographic Cultures and Heritage in the Photographic History Research Centre (PHRC) at De Montfort University United Kingdom. Alongside writings on photographic historiography, his research investigates intersections of photography with politics and cultural heritage practices, with his key publications focusing specifically on individual and public deployments of private, family, amateur and archival photographs in contexts such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Israeli society and twentieth-century histories of Polish Jewry. Earlier in life he worked as photojournalist, photography archivist, and fine art photographer and he has over a decade’s experience in teaching photographic practice, history and theory to graduate and postgraduate level students in the United Kingdom. Believing in the ability of participatory action research to improve social life and inclusivity, he regularly draws on his professional and academic experience and expertise to facilitate dialogue in transnational divided communities.
