David L. Smith is Emeritus associate professor of communication and former director of the Television Center at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He managed the operation as a self-sustaining production company, created the production curriculum, designed and taught courses: Television Production & Technology, Camerawork, Film/Television Directing, Lighting for Film & Television, Story Craft and Screenwriting, Visual Communication and Television Program Development. His undergraduate degrees are in Broadcasting (University of Cincinnati) and Photography (Rochester Institute of Technology). His graduate degree is in Communication with an emphasis in Anthropology (University of Cincinnati).
His textbook, Video Communication: Structuring Content for Maximum Program Effectiveness was adopted by universities in the United States and abroad.
Professionally, he worked in the industrial motion picture and broadcast industries serving in the capacities of cinematographer, director of photography (DP), writer, editor and producer of commercials, documentaries, corporate promotions, music videos, PSA’s, prime-time public affairs specials and children’s programming.
He was employed by Eastman Kodak Company, K&S Films Inc., Scripps-Howard Broadcasting (WCPO-TV), J&R Films Inc., Taft Broadcasting Co. (WKRC-TV) and WNEO/WEAO (PBS) in Kent, Ohio. His awards include Emmy, Cindy, American Corporate Video and American Film Institute.
