Originally from Chesterfield, UK, Ann Thorsson now lives on a farm by the sea, nestled under the iconic Snæfellsjökull (Snaefells-glacier), on the West peninsula of Iceland. She shares this idyll with her Icelandic husband, their two sons and two adorable Border Collie-Labs.
THE NORTH
Inspired by her Northern heritage, Ann began writing her debut novel, 'Downhill', as part of an Advanced Creative Writing course while completing her BA (Honours) degree in English Language and Literature through the Open University. She discovered the infinite joy of fiction writing - the power to create people, places, time and space. To be anyone, anywhere, anytime. Ann is a writer of contemporary social fiction (Domestic Noir), and poetry. NO GENERATIVE AI IS USED IN HER WRITING!
Though Ann now lives in Iceland, she still maintains strong links with the North of England. As the old saying goes - ”You can take the girl out of the North, but you can’t take the North out of the girl!”
Ann’s debut novel, 'Downhill' was published in 2019. Her second novel, a supernatural chiller entitled ‘Dark Dreams’, was released in September 2020, and her third book, a novella called 'Dark Shadows', was published in April 2022. Ann's fourth novel, a gritty domestic drama entitled Twists of Fate, was released in October 2025.
She is also putting together an anthology of poetry, and would love to write a light-hearted book about her local area of Snæfellsnes.
ICELAND
In 2018 and 2019, Ann assisted as a volunteer on the Iceland Writers Retreat. Designed to inspire, the retreat is an annual event in which writers from all genres attend workshops led by notable international authors. The retreat normally offers the opportunity to visit local places of interest, as well as listen to local music and learn about the country’s rich and diverse literary heritage and traditions.
And as a country steeped in a rich heritage of literature, Reykjavík was awarded UNESCO City of Literature status in 2011 - the first non-English speaking city to be bestowed with this award.
From the Sagas, to Laxness, to today’s contemporary literary scene, Iceland still continues to produce some of the finest writers in the world.
