Steven J. Slater is the principal author for the Service Design Book of Knowledge(TM) trilogy. Service design is a field of practice dedicated to designing services, those that make up the largest sector of our economy.
Popular services today include Amazon shopping, Marriott hospitality, CapitolOne banking and finance, Uber ride services, Google online services, patient and healthcare services, and services to distribute consumer packaged goods, along with other services within industries.
A prize-winning journalist, Steven has written for The Washington Post, The Journal Newspapers, the Donrey Media chain, and dozens of papers and magazines across the U.S. He left the field of journalism in the mid-1990s to pursue a career in marketing sciences, for which he used his skills to design, implement and improve lines of service. During 20+ years as a service design consultant, his results are attributed to more than $2 billion in traceable revenue.
In 2017, Steven began writing in earnest about the emerging practice of service design. Through his research, though, he was unable to uncover standards, methods and process for the field, even though it had been well established in academic circles and in practice in Europe.
He thought his background, including many years spent developing services alongside systems engineers, might be ideal for attempting a service design book of knowledge: documenting standards and process for service designers. All other non-aesthetic design practices have 'books of knowledge,' a compilation of standards, that practitioners can use.
Upon completing his first book, Be Relevant! How Brands Rise to the Top - A Practical Guide to Service Design, he formed the International Service Design Institute with Naomi Lantzman. The Institute, whose main mission and purpose is to share service design learning with designers around the world, has steadily grown.
