Vedat Akgiray

Vedat Akgiray was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1958. After teaching at several universities in the USA and Turkey during 1980s, he has been a professor of finance at Bogazici University in Istanbul since 1991. Among his students are several prominent central bankers, ministers, managers of banks and stock exchanges, fund managers and academicians. From 2009 to 2013, he served as the Chairman of the Capital Markets Board of Turkey. He led the team designing and writing the new Capital Markets Law of 2012. He also served on the IOSCO Board, the FSB of G20, and the Monitoring Board of the IFRS Foundation. He actively participated in re-designing the international regulatory architecture after the 2008 crisis.

His current interests are in economic-value-based corporate governance, digital disruptions in finance, and pension systems. His recently published book “Good Finance” studies the problems with the financial system and proposes ways to transform finance into a “humane” discipline. The basic problem is that economic and political elite are wrongly occupied more with the question of “how” than with “why”.
