Robert Schulman was born in Akron, Ohio in 1947, attended Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, and from there went to Brandeis University where he received a degree in English and American Literature. While tempted to pursue graduate studies in literature, he chose instead to go to medical school with the intention of becoming a psychiatrist. That led to his attending medical school in Cincinnati, Ohio. Upon graduating in 1974, he stayed on in Cincinnati to complete a residency in psychiatry, followed by matriculating in the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute, from which he graduated in 1985. Retirement from practicing psychiatry for 39 years in Cincinnati left a void in his life. Writing eventually filled that void.
Starting with a blog, he published short pieces about his personal life and career. Positive responses from readers encouraged him to write fiction. "In the Land of the Blind," his first novel, focuses on Dr. Steve Torman's development as a psychiatrist/psychoanalyst and as a man fully engaged with others in his personal life. In his second novel, "Torman Redux," he writes a sequel to the first book in which the reader learns more about the protagonist's life and career. "A Father in Time," his third novel about the fictional psychiatrist Dr. Torman, focuses on his character's efforts to treat a terminally ill man with an unusual belief about his origins, as well as Torman's struggle to reveal a secret to his son. A fourth book, "Love and Death in the Time of Covid," follows retired psychiatrist Arnie Chasen’s attempt to come to grips with aging, loneliness, and a search for meaning. Dr. Torman has a minor role in this story. A fifth book, “A Dog Runs Through It,” is the fourth book featuring Dr. Torman, who is mourning the loss of his dog Sarge. Torman and his son adopt a dog from a shelter, who has a major role in this tale. Both Torman and his son pursue romances that coincide with their efforts to bring their adopted dog home. A sixth book, "The Dark Side of the Moon," returns to the life of Arnie Chasen, who lives in Bisbee, AZ with his partner Vivian Myers. The story examines his relationship with his daughter and with 13-year-old Juan Hammer, who Arnie mentors. Dr. Torman has a small role in this novel, as do a couple of dogs. A seventh book, "Taking Chances," is the third installment focused on Arnie Chasen. Arnie opens a part-time business offering dream interpretations to the public. He continues to mentor Juan Hammer, who, at 15, is entering the world of dating, as well as honing his cybersecurity skills. Chance Vaughn, a victim of childhood and young adult sexual abuse, finds a man who turns out to ideal in most every way. Chances are taken by various characters, with mixed results.
Robert lives with his partner (and muse) Sherry Davis and their Staffordshire Bull Terrier Archie. He has two sons who also live in Cincinnati.
