An alumnus of The Rishi Valley School ( J Krishnamurthi Foundation) and Miranda
House, Delhi, Maya started her career as a lecturer in English at the Delhi University
soon after completion of her post-graduation. After marriage, she moved to Mumbai
and began a career in copy writing in the field of advertising. Her passion for writing
was the start of her journalistic career spanning well over thirty years. She has written
on a variety of subjects ranging from Travel, Parenting, Spirituality, Pop Culture and
Humour for magazines and newspapers like Times of India, Deccan Herald, Free Press
Journal, Independent, Femina, Care and Eve’s Weekly.
Maya accompanied her husband to Japan where they were posted. While in Tokyo she
was a regular contributor to the Japan Times. Her husband’s next assignment took them
to Dubai where Maya enjoyed a parallel career teaching English at a British
International school besides being a weekly columnist for The Khaleej Times.
Widely travelled, a trip through Rajasthan with a group of friends encouraged Maya to
share her experiences in the form of a book. Her first novel The Bangle Seller was thus
born. Her second novel On the Crest of a Wave highlights the life and culture of a small
fishing community off the coast of Chennai.
Maya has been involved in voluntary social work and teaching underprivileged children.
Besides, she is also a palmist and believes in psychic phenomena and the power of the
mind. Her other interests are painting, philosophy, reiki, meditation and homeopathy.
