Bob Hartnett’s interest in Frank Lloyd Wright’s work began many years ago after visiting Wright’s Prairie style buildings in Illinois.
Subsequently, Hartnett became a volunteer for the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust as a tour guide at both the Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio and at the Unity Temple. Hartnett has also been a volunteer for other Wright tours in both Illinois and Wisconsin.
Hartnett’s involvement in the Bach House dates back seven years ago to a time just after the home reopened after an extensive restoration. The more he learned about the house, the accounts of its development, and the families who had lived there, the more he started to see that this story needed to be shared with others. As he began making notes on the building, Hartnett first thought a magazine article was developing—but, as his research continued, a full book emerged.
While writing, Hartnett took into account his passion for architecture and history, his tour guide training, and his belief that being a guide is about real engagement and not simply disseminating information. Hartnett set out to write a book that would be entertaining and informative and in 2019, Frank Lloyd Wright’s $10,000 Home: History, Design, and Restoration of the Bach House, was published.
Hartnett believes that “Retirement” is about keeping busy. When not giving tours, he enjoys time with his two grandchildren, his garden railroad, woodworking, and traveling with his wife and friends.
