Maj Gen James J. “Rev” Jones transitioned from active military duty after more than 31 years of military service. Prior to retiring from the Air Force, Maj Gen Jones served as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans and Requirements, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, where he was responsible to the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff for formulating policy supporting air, space, irregular warfare, counter-proliferation, homeland security, weather and cyber operations. As the Air Force Operations Deputy to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Jones helped determine operational requirements, capabilities and training necessary to support national security objectives and military strategy.
Maj Gen Jones received his commission through Officer Training School in 1983 after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Louisiana Tech University in 1981. His early assignments allowed him to gain high levels of credibility in the F-16, where he served as an instructor pilot, Chief of Weapons and Tactics, and an academic flight commander at the U.S. Air Force Weapons School. He also held staff assignments at the Air Land Sea Application Center, where he developed multi-service tactics techniques and procedures for the joint force, and at the Air Staff, where he was responsible or determining munitions requirements. Following an operational command assignment of a fighter squadron, General Jones had the unique opportunity to gain operational expertise in airborne command and control platforms, refueling aircraft, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems, giving General Jones a robust ability to understand airpower integration requirements across the spectrum of operations. Maj Gen Jones has commanded an operations group, the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing in Southwest Asia, the 116th Air Control Wing, and the 55th Wing, where he was recognized as Air Combat Command’s best wing commander in 2009.
